problems sending Garageband projects from my iPad mini 2 to other apple products

Apologies for being off track, but replying to this thread is the only way I can see to ask a question in this forum. At one point I stumbled into an area where I could post and received a message "You do not have permission to post" or words to that effect. The is the most unintuitive forum I have ever seen. Anyway I think this thread answers my question about sharing projects between iPads. It seems it has to be done via iTunes. I will try that. Here was the question I wanted to post;

How can I send a GarageBand song (project) created in iOS GarageBand to a friend so he can then load it in his iPad, edit it, add to it and send it back to me?

Every time I Google for a solution I get "Here's how you share a song in GarageBand". These tutorials never detail how to share a song (project), they show how to render a song (project) to a single audio file and send it somewhere. Note that what I would call a "project", GarageBand calls a "song".

Send a GarageBand song to iTunes

• Tap My Songs, then tap Select.
• Tap the song you want to send, then tap the Action button .
• Tap Share Song via iTunes.
• Do one of the following:
  • To send the song as a GarageBand song, tap GarageBand.
  • To send the song as an audio file, tap iTunes, then tap Share.
  After you tap the iTunes icon, you can choose the quality of the file GarageBand sends to iTunes. You can also add artist, composer, and title information that appears in iTunes.
• Sync your iPad with your computer.In iTunes, the exported song appears in the Documents list in the File Sharing area when GarageBand is selected.
• Do one of the following:
  • Drag the song from the GarageBand Documents list to the Finder.
  • Click Save As, navigate to the location where you want to save the song, then click Save.

You can open the GarageBand song in GarageBand on your Mac, or play the audio file in iTunes (or any compatible audio application) on your computer. GarageBand songs cannot be opened on a Windows computer.

If you save your GarageBand project to iTunes as described above and save it to your computer, how do you forward it to your friend? If you mail it. compress it, to ensure that the project does not get corrupted.

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities. I know having an issue with sharing your GarageBand files from your iPad is not what you expect. Based on what you stated, it seems you may be having issues with software, and I suggest these steps to resolve your issue:

1. Restart your iPhone as the shut down and start up process is important to keep the iPhone software running properly:

Restart your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

2. Then I suggest testing sharing the file through iTunes from GarageBand on your iPad to your other Apple devices, and then with the other options as described here:

Where are you trying to send the GarageBand projects to? Other applications? Other devices?

The only way to share GarageBand projects as projects is to share them to iTunes or iCloud. All other sharing options can only share the projects as audio files. Did you try to share using iTunes or iCloud?

I don't have any other Apple devices,my friend does,therein lies the problem.Could it be that there's something incompatible between the ios version and the full blown Mac version?

GarageBand for Mac can open GarageBand iOS projects. It will convert the iOS version to the Mac version.

If you upload the iOS version to iCloud, you can open the GarageBand project on a Mac that is using the same AppleID for the iCloud account.

I'll try to find a PC user who can help. I have only Mac computers.

Well that was an interesting puzzle!

If I create a GB project on my iPad, save it into iCloud, then open it through iCloud Drive on my Mac it all works fine. I then tried forwarding the project via email, dragged the project from the email to the desktop and tried to open it. GarageBand tries to open, prompts you to create a new (presumably GB for OS X) project to copy into, and then fails. Looking at the file sizes of the email attachment compared to the copy downloaded via iCloud drive gives a clue, they're not the same. I renamed the .band on my desktop with a .zip file extension, double-clicked it, and out popped a new .band file of the correct size. This one opens in GarageBand! 🙂

I suspect the same approach might be necessary if you export to iTunes, copy that out using iTunes File Sharing, and then try to mail the .band file. I don't have time right now to test.

Hi,

Do either of you own a Mac? I've just tried emailing myself a song exported to iCloud, and while it seems that I'm going to be able to open the attachment it fails. I also failed to export or import .band project files via DropBox even though that seemed to be a possibility.

What I was able to do was share the file into iTunes on my device as a project, locate that in iTunes > Device > Apps > File Sharing > Garage Band. Select and use Save to... to export the .band file to the local file system. I then renamed the exported file (which I could have emailed anywhere), dragged it back into the File Sharing area, and then opened the new renamed copy on my iPhone. So a round trip or transfer is definitely possible now (it used not to be). You just need to avoid a situation where it is twice compressed when it shouldn't be or it won't open.

Which version of GarageBand does your friend have on the Mac?

And which version of GarageBand do you have on your iPad? Not all versions are compatible.
